The San Diego Wild Animal Park Photo Caravan Safari Tour & Lunch: This last minute add-on to D4$ will be hosted by those world travelers Alice and Doug Diamond. The event will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2008 from approximately 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Wild Animal Park near Escondido. This event is similar to, but much better than, the tour service that the park offers (www.sandiegozoo.org/calendar/wap_photo_caravan.html), because the Diamonds are including park admission, parking, an early talk with an educator, the tour, and lunch (including wine and beer). The Park would charge you $150 for just the tour, and you wouldn’t even have your UU friends or the Diamonds as your special hosts. This trip is your chance to go in trucks into the heart of the field exhibits, take wonderful pictures and hear trained biologists talk about the animals. You will take either the giraffe route or the hippo route (possibly both but don’t count on it). See other animals such as oryx, gazelles, large birds, etc. And after lunch you can go visit the darling lion cubs and baby elephants. Starting bid is $75 and space is limited to 10.
Vietnamese Cuisine - Fresh and Delicious: Hosted by Lynn, Chuck, Aiden and Claire Northrop, Saturday, October 11, at 5:00 p.m., South Park.
Do you know how many different varieties of fresh basil, mint, and other aromatic herbs are found in Vietnamese cuisine? Do you know their names? Do you know how to wrap these lovelies in sheets of silken rice flour with (or without) grilled shrimp or succulent meats cooked right at your table? Do you know the story of nuc mum? Bonus question: can you guess why Lynn, who is undeniably Caucasian, has ten ethnically Chinese siblings who were born in Viet Nam? (Prizes for right answers!) For answers to these questions and a delightful and healthy meal with like-minded people, join us in our newly renovated kitchen for a friendly tour through some of Vietnam's tastiest cuisine. Children are welcome - ours will be there! Children age 12 and under are free! Starting Bid: $20; Buy It Now $50.
When your bidding booklet arrives, you can start to look over the events you want to bid on. Check the dates with your calendar so you don’t have a conflict. We also tried very hard not have two events at the same time. We have some very fun and unusual dinners offered this year including foods of South Africa, Morocco, the Philippines, Russia/Polish, Ethiopia, the Caribbean Islands, and some returning favorites – the Morgan’s Italian Feast, Jorge’s “Cio-Pinot,” Ellen’s Asian special served in your home, and Sylvia’s Spanish Tapas, catered for you and up to 25 of your guests. Not to mention Arvid’s Louisiana Shrimp Boil! There are many special events, such as Movie and Desserts with the Rev. Kathleen and Cynthia, Lunch with Your California Assembly Member Lori Saldaña, a Homeopathy Class, two special women’s events, and a very special Valentine’s Day (2009) Chris Hassett/Drew Massicot concert. As well as two popular concerts are returning one featuring George Svoboda and the other featuring our own Charles Ellis-MacLeod. Want to get away to a fun destination? Choose from Kay’s townhome in Park City Utah, Benita’s Big Bear cabin, Joan’s Massachusetts family Lake Cottage, or the Richard’s place at Donner Lake. There are also tours, outings, luncheons, and pool parties for the kids and families.
We have a record number of services offered, ranging from tax preparation, to massage, personal planning, book appraisal, photography, and lessons in voice, art, pottery, and Greek cooking/dance. Dan is even letting someone conduct the Church choir at one of their rehearsals! Once again, Linda Sola and her food artists who so ably bring you Sunday treats on the patio will cater your event in Bard Hall. And there are many more offerings. There is something for everyone.
Bidding begins at church on May 4 (Sunday) and continues for the following two Sundays. Going away then or unable to make it to church? No problem, we will accept e-mail bids. Just e-mail Dave Hunt with your desire to bid and he will give you instructions. Please contact Dave by e-mail to uusancal@san.rr.com or at 858-273-2006.
