You are welcome to explore waiting, the ancient Advent theme. Topics will include "Why Wait or the folly of impatience" and "What are we waiting for (How we are enriched by waiting.)" In addition to presentation and discussion we will enjoy singing some traditional Advent songs. You are invited to bring finger foods to share. Paper products and beverages will be provided. “Advent is a time to slow down the hectic pace of life and get in touch with our longings, hopes and dreams.” Notes from the meeting of the Stay subcommittee forum. Download the meeting notes.
We had a great turnout for our first forum as we vision the future. Rhiannon Smith, Board President led the forum and shared key points about our process. She gave a brief background of why we’re discussing this by sharing that we’re continuing the process that started two years ago, when UCSD approached us with their master plan which will have major implications for our Hillcrest campus. This, as well as their offer to buy some or all of our campus and the likelihood that the decline in our parking revenue will continue, led the board to start discussing ways to determine our options and inform the congregation so that you could eventually come to a decision. Rhiannon also shared how the Visioning the Future groups came to be, stating we formed four subcommittees to research and present information in the following areas: Go, Stay, Real Estate, and Negotiations; as well as the Core Team (which oversees the process as a whole).
We made a huge push for volunteers for these subcommittees through an e-blast, The Window, pulpit announcements, our website, appeals to small ministry groups, etc. Chairs were chosen based on interest and relevant experience. The leaders of the sub-committees were introduced and then we had time for questions and answers. A reminder: the recording of the 11/3 forum will be available until 11/11. On Tuesday, 11/12 the recording of the 11/10 forum will be available to watch. Stay tuned.
Nov. 3rd Core Team forum: Come and meet the members of the Core Team and hear about their work and get an update of our process in Bard Hall.
Nov. 10 Stay Sub-Committee: Come and hear reports about the work of this sub-committee and some of the implications of what staying would mean in Bard Hall. Nov. 17 Go Sub-Committee: Come and hear reports about the work of this sub-committee and some of the implications of what going would mean in Bard Hall. Nov. 24 Real Estate Sub-Committee: Come and hear reports about the work of this sub-committee and considerations of potential areas in Bard Hall. Dec. 1 Stay Sub-Committee: NOTE: this meeting will not be in Bard Hall but will be in the Clark Chapel. Dec. 8 Go Sub-Committee: in Bard Hall. Dec. 15 Real Estate Sub-Committee: in Bard Hall. *Forums will resume in January and February. Please note that these forums will be focused solely on their areas of work. Any questions or comments outside the scope of the presenting sub-committees will be given to the chair of the appropriate sub-committee. We just received the public links for UCSD's upcoming plans from Campus Planning. Read the Environmental Impact Report (EIR) and Long Range Development Plan (LRDP).

Brian Krohne Brian is a computer programmer with roots in California and Tennessee. Before coming to San Diego, Brian attended UU congregations in South Carolina and Atlanta. Brian is the father of a one-year old daughter Esther, who is often seen wandering around the patio after services offering fist bumps. Brian, Esther, and Becca have lived in San Diego since 2015. Remarks by Rev. Kathleen Owens on new church programming.
"Welcome to a new season and some changes in our congregation this year. We welcome Lara Korneychuk, our new Interim Music Coordinator for our Hillcrest campus and Chase Pado, our Interim Pianist/Organist. Lara will direct our Chalice and Youth choirs and work with our other choir directors (Tony Bianca, Lorelei Isidro-Garner, and Andrea Newall-Locket) to ensure our music ministry continues to thrive. Our worship theme this month is Brave, Honest Community. It’s a theme that speaks to the needs of our congregation right now – honest in who we are, what our needs, dreams, and resources are, and how we’re being called to serve in the greater San Diego region. Brave in engaging with the important work of a new strategic plan, grounded in our values and principles that will help shape our various conversations about the opportunities for our future." By Stevie K. Carmody, Intern Minister Many months have passed since this protest, but the learnings have stuck with me, and the urgency of this call has not abated. Because of my short (3 hour) detention and the ensuing Federal Misdemeanor charge, I waited to offer something to this blog until after my court date had passed. On May 8th, I pleaded guilty in court to a charge of “nonconformity to the lawful orders of a federal agent.” Those detained and charged that day were ordered to pay a fine and perform community service. Here’s the story of that day, to complement Rev. Kathleen’s account on this blog, and offer my own reflections: Online Bidding is now closed but you can still bid on nearly 50 events that have spaces remaining! Download a list of Spaces Available as of 6/3/19. We have close to 1,100 winning bids from nearly 200 of you. And, we still have over 50 events that are not full. So we will print bidding sheets and have them in Bard Hall this Sunday so you can continue to sign up for these fun events and services at the minimum bid. We are currently at almost $43,000 and our goal is $50,000.

Love knows no borders. Not only is this a truth in the reality of people’s lives and experience today – it has always been a truth – we’ve been loving beyond and across barriers and borders since we knew we could love. And earlier this month, Love Knows No Borders was also a campaign, organized by the American Friends Services Committee – a campaign to draw attention to what has been happening to migrant families, to people living in dangerous circumstances and crippling poverty who walked for weeks to our border, to seek asylum, to try for a better life for themselves and their present and future children. In spite of the horrible treatment our government has imposed on families already living in this country – separating families, taking children out of the arms of their parents (15,000 children currently living in temporary tent cities and shelters), the caravan of people from Latin America came in hope. And though I was recently back from part 1 of my sabbatical, I knew I needed to participate. I had to respond to the immoral and inhumane behavior of my government and how they were treating people who were coming to our border to ask for asylum.
Volunteers are vital to the work of First UU and many members find volunteering to be a meaningful way to be involved in church life. As part of an ongoing series, church member Elaine Twamley interviews a volunteer about their work. Their stories offer illustrate the many enjoyable and meaningful ways to volunteer. Susan was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1941 and was one of three siblings. Susan and her sister were sent to an orphanage when they were small children. They were adopted when Susan was four and she grew up with her adoptive parents in Marblehead, Massachusetts. After attending a boarding high school,Susan went to Sweet Briar College in Virginia. At that time, the school was chartered as a school for "young white ladies." In her Sweet Briar years, Susan participated in a drug store sit-in—a sign of things to come. Text of the speech delivered by Rev. Kathleen Owens at the San Diego Organizing Project's Border Wall Press Conference in San Ysidro. "Good afternoon, I’m the Rev. Kathleen Owens, Lead Minister at First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Diego answering the call of Love. We are here to speak the truth – that unless we are of Indigenous Native American or Mexican heritage, we are all immigrants on this land. We’re here to name the truth that immigrants have always made this country better…that we need bridges, not walls." |
